As described in the presentation, the Future Land Use Map is a projection of how the Oxford area is likely to develop over the next twenty years and provides the City of Oxford a basis on which to make decisions about zoning, annexation and investments in infrastructure and city services. Upon adoption, the Future Land Use Map will have no impact on current uses. Instead, the Future Land Use Map will be a guide to the city, residents and property owners indicating the types of development---initiated by land owners and developers---that will be supported by the City through its regulatory processes and infrastructure planning.
Following the presentation, meeting attendees were given an opportunity to identify their priorities among a list of thirty-eight recommendations the planning consultant has identified through consultation with city officials, the Comprehensive Plan steering committee and community meeting participants. Industrial recruitment and widening US Highway 78/Hamrick Drive were clear favorites, followed by revitalization in older commercial areas, widening Friendship Road, a bicycle-pedestrian trail along Choccolocco Creek and a downtown entertainment district.
